lisa fontaine makes up one half of ginger’s (a very covetable caftan company) business duo. it’s no doubt her style is dynamic, and bright — just take a peek at her designs. that’s why we were thrilled to see a peek into her home photographed by michelle drewes, and ask her a few burning questions about life as a designer and lady of style.

sfgirl: describe your design style in 3 words:
lisa fontaine: clean, collected, and creative.
sfgirl: what made you jump at the opportunity to start your own line of caftans?
lisa: a caftan perfectly captures the essence of my style, comfortable and stylish with a strong west coast vibe. nan and i wanted to create a dress that was both flattering and comfortable and would work on women of all shapes and sizes. our customers span across all age demographics and we feel super proud to have created something that appeals to so many.

sfgirl: where do you source inspiration from? for your home, for your designs?
lisa: my friend’s all have amazing homes that deeply inspire me. i also search pinterest and home design blogs almost daily. i don’t have just one style i am committed to so i like to keep ideas for living in a desert ranch house, a spanish style hacienda, a parisian apartment, a victorian, etc. for ginger, nan and i find inspiration in vintage fashion. we both share a love of thrifting and flea markets and want to reinvent some of those old classics, like the caftan, to work for today’s busy woman.

sfgirl:your most beloved room in your house?
lisa: my living room has always been my fave ever since i laid eyes on it. the cathedral ceilings and floor to ceiling glass is something i never grow tired of.
sfgirl: what do you feel is the most freeing part of pursuing your creative passions?
lisa: it’s very important to me to love my work. i feel that life is way too short to work in a job i am not passionate about. it’s also wonderful to work for myself where i can create my own schedule. my 3 kids are always #1 so i don’t schedule work commitments during the time of day my kids need me. my business partner nan is also a mother so we are understanding that our commitments to our kids come before work.

sfgirl: what do you do to decompress from work, and life in general?
lisa: i love a busy life and hectic schedule, which is a good thing because that’s what i have. however, i do need an hour or two of downtime at the end of everyday which usually involves a movie and a craft project (embroidery, weaving, knitting). i almost always two-time my screen time with a project or reading on another screen. so, even my downtime can be busy. i need to work on that.
sfgirl: if you could be anywhere in the world right now where would you be?
lisa: in a hammam in morocco. i have never been to morocco but i rarely travel back to the same spots i have already been. in my opinion, the world is too big to visit the same place twice. i know i would love it. the landscape, the architecture, the souks and rituals.
